Situation Analysis "Gender Equality and Women's Rights in Myanmar"

The publication "Gender Equality and Women's Rights in Myanmar: A Situation Analysis", produced by the Department of Social Welfare, Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and  Resettlement, the UN and ADB was successfully launched on the 7th October, 2016 at the Hilton Hotel, Nay Pyi Taw. The publication is intended to influence implementation of the National Strategic Plan on the Advancement of Women (2012-22).

The Union Minister Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement U Win Myat Aye opened and launched the publication. The opening remarks on behalf of the UN RC/HC and the UN system were read by Jean D'Cunha, Head UN Women, Myanmar and the ADB opening remarks by Winfried Wicklein Country Director, ADB.

The event was attended by 3 Union Ministers - Union Minister Social Welfare, Relief, and Resettlement, Union Minister Labor, Population and Immigration and Union Minister Education.  There was DG/DDG level representation from MOFA, DRD, Commerce and Trade, Health, Education, DSW, GAD. Also present were the Chair, Secretary and members of the Parliamentary Committee on the Rights of Women and Children and 4 members of the Nay Pyi Taw Council. There were about 200 participants at the opening that included Government, CSOs and the International development Community.

The launch was followed by an interesting multi-stakeholder policy dialogue comprising govt, cso and UN/ADB panelists on the GSA themes - economy, education, health, EVAW, governance/political participation, peace process. There were 10 UN agencies in attendance - ILO, UNAIDS, UNDP, UNFPA, UNICEF, UNOPS, UNHCR, WFP, UN Women, and FAO. UN panelists included representatives of UNAIDS, UNDP, UNFPA, UNICEF, UN Women together with ADB. UN Women made the framework presentation.
